RCMP vs provincial police
Only two provinces run their own provincial police force: Ontario, with the OPP, and Quebec, with the Sûreté du Québec. Everywhere else, provincial policing is the RCMP under contract.

The structural difference
The RCMP is a national force that also does provincial and municipal policing under contract. The OPP and the Sûreté du Québec are provincial forces, and in their provinces the RCMP does federal work only.
So in Ontario or Quebec you are not choosing between two versions of the same job. You are choosing between provincial policing at home, and a federal career that could take you anywhere.
Staying in the province
This is the practical heart of it. A provincial service keeps you inside one province, which still means assignments and detachments you did not pick, but within a geography you know and near the people you know. The RCMP can post you to another province entirely.
Language, honestly
In Quebec, French is not a nice-to-have. Bilingual capability matters in parts of the RCMP too, and it opens postings that would otherwise be closed to you. Worth being clear-eyed about before you apply.
What your week looks like
Provincial policing leans heavily on highways, rural detachments and assisting municipal services, so twelve-hour compressed rotations like 4 on 4 off are common, with long drives built into the shift.
What is not on these pages
