How many pay periods in 2028?

Twenty-six, for almost everyone. Twenty-seven if your first pay date of the year falls early enough — and 2028 is a leap year, which widens that window by a day.

The rule for 2028

2028 holds 27 biweekly pay dates if your first pay date of the year falls on 2 January or earlier. Otherwise it holds 26.

Check your first pay slip of the year and you have the answer. Nothing else matters — not your rotation, not your hours, not your overtime.

The same year, one day apart

Two people on the same fortnightly cycle, one paid a single day later than the other:

First pay date Saturday 1 January 2028 — 27 pay dates in 2028
First pay date Monday 3 January 2028 — 26 pay dates in 2028

One day of difference, a whole pay date apart. That is why the answer to “how many pay periods this year” is never just a number.

Why it happens

Twenty-six pay dates two weeks apart cover 364 days. 2028 is 366 days long, so two days are left over. Those spare days accumulate year on year until an extra pay date eventually falls inside one calendar year.

Twice a month is a different thing

If you are paid on the fifteenth and the last day of the month, or any other twice-monthly arrangement, you get 24 pay dates in 2028 and in every other year. Twenty-four and twenty-six sound close and behave completely differently.

What it means for the money

Where each pay date is a fixed amount, a 27th means an extra payment. Where an annual salary is spread across the year's pay dates, each one is slightly smaller and the total is unchanged.

Which applies to you is set by your employer and your agreement. Ask payroll before the year starts rather than working it out from a payslip in March.
