Why a general shift app breaks on a police rotation
The big shift calendars are good software. They are also built for nurses, drivers, retail staff and factory crews at the same time, and a police week has four or five things in it that no general app was ever asked to hold.

A general shift calendar will draw your rotation months ahead, colour it, put it on your home screen and share it with your wife. Some of them do that better than anything built for one trade, because they have had a decade and a very large number of users to polish it. If that is all you need, use one.

Where it starts to slip
Court is not a shift
A subpoena lands on a day off, at a time nobody chose, and it is the one thing on your calendar that costs you money if you miss it. A general app has a shift type and an appointment, and court is neither. BlueShifts has a Court category and the subpoena details go in the notes.
The words do not travel
The two largest general apps are built around a rota, annual leave and time in lieu. Your roster runs on a shift bid, comp time, a Kelly day and a tour. Same idea, different country, and the settings screen is where you feel it. The vocabulary, side by side.
Paid duty work is a second job the app has never heard of
This is the real gap. General apps calculate an estimate from an hourly rate: hours times rate, and a number at the bottom. That works when one employer pays you for everything. It does not describe a Saturday worked for a construction company, an evening at a stadium and a Sunday for a school district, each at a different rate, each paid at a different time, one of them still unpaid three weeks later. BlueShifts records each job under the employer who hired you, with the rate, the kilometres and whether the money has arrived.
Nobody else is on your squad
Shift work in most trades is individual. Policing is not: you bid a squad, you work with those people, and half the questions you actually ask are about somebody else's days off. That is why the rotation tools here answer questions about two rotations rather than one.
What a general app still does that BlueShifts does not
Worth saying plainly rather than being caught out by it. BlueShifts does not track your regular-duty overtime and does not keep an earned-days-off bank — the off-duty side is what it records. It has no desktop version. It does not do split shifts, and it holds three shift types: day, night and a 24-hour tour. If those are the features you are switching for, one of the general apps will serve you better and it is better to know that now.
