My Shift Planner for police officers

What it does well

The pattern library covers the shapes police work — blocks of on and off days, two shift types alternating, long stretches — and it will carry them years ahead. The leave tracking, the reports and the reminders are all solid, and a great many officers use it happily.

Where it comes from

It is a British app, and the vocabulary is the giveaway: rota, annual leave, time in lieu. None of that is a fault. It does mean the words it uses are not the words on your bid sheet, and that the model behind it is a five-day week with shifts laid over it.

The four things it was not asked to hold

• Court. A subpoena is not a shift, it lands on days off, and it is paid under its own rule.
• Comp time. Hours banked rather than paid, spent later, tracked by nobody but you.
• Details. Paid duty work for a different employer, at a different rate, paid weeks later or not at all.
• Squads. Which crew you bid onto decides your weekends for a year, and a general calendar has no concept of the other squads at all.

Being straight about the swap

If leave balances and timesheets are what you need, My Shift Planner does those and BlueShifts does not. What BlueShifts adds is the police half of the week.

BlueShifts starts in the same place — a repeating rotation drawn on a month — and then covers the part of the job a general shift calendar was never asked to hold: the paid duty jobs, by employer, with the hours, the pay, the kilometres and whether the money has actually arrived.
