The trade nobody spells out
Becoming a trooper often means going where the state sends you, at least at first. That is the single biggest factor for anyone with a partner who works, children in school, or a house they do not want to sell. Ask early how posting works, how long before you can request a transfer, and what the odds are of getting near home.
City policing does not usually ask that of you. You apply to a place you already want to live.
What you actually do all shift
The documents draw this line themselves. West Virginia describes the trooper's mission as statewide enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, with emphasis on the safety of public streets, roads and highways, and its essential functions are built around enforcing DUI and traffic laws, executing motor vehicle stops and investigating crashes. Fort Worth describes the city officer as patrolling an assigned area and responding to calls for service — the call decides what the hour holds.
Neither is easier and neither is the better job. They differ in what starts the work: on the road you generate most of it yourself, and on a city beat it comes to you.
Backup and distance
How far away the next unit is depends entirely on the post, and it varies as much within one state patrol as it does between a state patrol and a city force. Nobody can tell you in general, and a comparison page that tries is guessing.
Ask at interview: how many units cover this post overnight, and what does backup actually look like at three in the morning? If the honest answer is that you will often be alone for a while, that is worth knowing before you accept, not after.
What your week looks like
State agencies often run eight or ten-hour patterns on long rotations — 5-2 5-3 and 4/10 are common — while city departments have moved heavily to twelve-hour patterns like Panama and Pitman.
Add the commute. A twelve-hour shift forty minutes from home is a fourteen-hour day, and that is the number that decides whether a schedule is liveable.

The middle city department starts about $169 more than the middle state patrol — but the ranges overlap almost completely: $33,280 to $163,619 against $53,724 to $110,916. Which of the two pays you more depends far more on which two agencies you are choosing between than on which kind of agency they are.

No hiring requirements and no academy lengths. Those vary by state and agency and change often enough that anything published here would be wrong within a year. The pay above is the exception: every figure comes from the agency's own document and carries its date, so you can check it rather than trust it.
