Transit police vs municipal police
A city officer works a district. A transit officer works a line that runs through several of them. That single difference changes the calls, the courts and the shape of the rotation.

The honest difference
City policing is geographic. You learn a district, the people in it and the corners that generate calls. Transit policing is systemic. You learn a line, its stations, its timetable and the rhythm of who is on it at seven in the morning against eleven at night.
The people are largely the same people. The difference is that they are in motion, and so are you.
The jurisdiction problem
A district officer answers to one court. A transit officer can arrest in one county on Monday and another on Thursday, and be summonsed to both, in buildings an hour apart. It is the single most common complaint from officers who transfer in, and the single biggest reason to keep court dates somewhere reliable.
What your week actually looks like
Transit schedules are built backwards from service hours. Where a system runs close to round the clock that usually means twelve-hour patterns like Panama or Pitman. Where it shuts overnight, eight-hour watches on a 5-2 5-3 are more common, with extra bodies stacked onto the morning and evening peaks and sometimes an overlap tour that exists only for the rush.
Which one to apply for
Transit suits officers who like a defined environment, a clear mission and a great deal of contact with the public in a confined space. It suits people who do not mind being underground, out of signal, for most of a tour.
If what you want is the widest possible variety of calls and the deepest bench of specialist units, a city department will give you more of both.
