Police pay against the cost of living
What the money is actually worth where the officer lives. Every entry salary here is divided by the price level of its own area, so a figure in San Jose and a figure in rural Kansas can be read against each other. The order changes a great deal.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Adjusted for local prices, the highest-paying agency in the country is Santa Clara Police Department at $148,175 of buying power — from a published $163,619 against a price level of 110.4. The median across 1,667 agencies is $70,790.
