Peoria Police Department entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Peoria Police Department starts at $74,194 a year — about $35.67 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $7,509 above the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $6,054 above the median for municipal agencies.
How big the department isPeoria Police Department reported 234 sworn officers and 120 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.2 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 201,962.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Peoria says about itself
The Peoria Police Department has a strong Community Oriented Policing philosophy, which shapes the way the Department conducts its daily business.
What Peoria does
The Peoria Police Department serves the city of Peoria, Arizona, in Maricopa County north-west of Phoenix, with about 300 employees and an operating budget of approximately $48 million. Its officers are represented by the Peoria Police Officers' Association under a 2026-2028 agreement that prices a separate Police Recruit job code beneath an eight-step Police Officer ladder rising five per cent a step, and permits eight, ten or twelve hour shifts in a fourteen-day work period with shift preference bid on a calendar-year basis.
Where the figure comes from
Checked 21 September 2026. City of Peoria / Peoria Police Officers' Association Memorandum of Understanding 2026-2028, Article 3 Wages — "Wage Table as of July 1, 2026: Rank Step Hourly Rate Annual Rate Step Increase — Police Officer 1 $35.67 $74,193.60". — open the source document
$74,193.60 is the agreement's own annual rate for Police Officer Step 1 and no arithmetic has been applied to it - the table prints $35.67 hourly beside it. THE RECRUIT CLASS IS A SEPARATE JOB CODE AND IS NOT THE FIGURE: the City's own job-code table carries "P00000 Police Recruit Hourly Non Manager PPOA Police Recruit Step 01 - Police Recruit - 33.97 USD" at a single flat rate, minimum equal to maximum, beneath "P00001 Police Officer ... Step 01 - Police Officer (0-12 Months) - 35.67 USD". AND IT CORRECTS A READING THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN WRONG BOTH WAYS: the $35.67 to $50.19 band on the Department's recruiting site was taken by an earlier pass for a LATERAL range. It is not - it is the full Police Officer classification range, so $35.67 is the officer minimum, and treating it as lateral-only would have left this agency unwritten for no reason. Excluded from the figure: every step above Step 1, which are time steps at 5 per cent each from 12 to 96 months. THE FIGURE IS DATED BY THE AGREEMENT ITSELF, the first pay period to include 1 July 2026.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
