What the Continental schedule is

Continental covers twenty-four hours with three eight-hour tours and moves crews between them quickly — typically after two or three shifts.

The theory is fairness. Nobody is stuck on permanent nights, and every crew shares the unpopular tours equally across the cycle.

The practice is harder. Changing tour every couple of days means the body never adapts to any of them.

How the cycle runs

One full twenty-eight day cycle. Each block runs two or three shifts on a tour before rotating forward — days, then swings, then nights. The swing tours are the middle run in each block:

1Build the template

Set a start day, set the length to 28 days, and paint each one. Only the first cycle is painted — the app repeats it from there.

The shift calendar built for your rotation, off-duty work, and life on and off the clock.

Save this pattern once and the year fills itself in — forward as far as you want, and back over the months you have already worked.

Weekends off on this rotation

This cycle is 28 days, which divides by seven — so it lands on the same weekdays for ever and never drifts. Which weekends you get is decided by your squad, not by the pattern. Across the squads the answer runs from 0 weekends a year to 13.

A squad that does well on this rotation: 13 full weekends across a year. A weekend counts only when both the Saturday and the Sunday are free. All 21 rotations compared →

BlueShifts has no swing shift type. It has three — day, night and a 24-hour tour — and because a swing tour starts during the day, it goes down as a day shift.

The sleep problem

A crew working day shifts on Monday and Tuesday, swings on Wednesday and Thursday, and nights on Friday and Saturday has asked their body for three different sleep schedules in one week.

Rotating forward — days to swings to nights — is easier than rotating backwards, because pushing bedtime later is more natural than pulling it earlier. If your agency rotates the other direction, that is worth raising.

Hours and overtime

Eight-hour tours across a balanced cycle land close to forty hours a week, which is one of the reasons administrators like it.

The trade-off shows up in fatigue and sick time rather than on the pay line.

Who works it

Continental is most common where three distinct tours are needed and headcount is tight:

  • Manufacturing and process plants
  • Some police and corrections agencies
  • Emergency dispatch
  • Utilities and control rooms
  • Transport and logistics
  • Security operations

The trade-off

What works

  • Nobody is stuck on permanent nights
  • Shares unpopular tours evenly across crews
  • Eight-hour shifts rather than twelves
  • Close to a clean forty-hour week

What hurts

  • The fastest rotation in use — the body never adjusts
  • Sleep debt accumulates across the cycle
  • Hard on family routine and childcare
  • Days off are frequent but short

Put it on your calendar

Two days, two evenings, two nights, then off — the fastest rotation in common use, and the hardest to reconstruct from memory.

Save the cycle once and every tour lands where it should, with the swing tours recorded as day shifts.

Common questions

How fast does a Continental schedule rotate?

Crews typically change tour every two to three shifts, moving through days, swings and nights.

Is Continental better than a 12-hour rotation?

It depends what you're optimising for. Eight-hour tours are shorter and the week is closer to forty hours, but the fast rotation is harder on sleep than a twelve-hour pattern with a slow tour change.

What's a swing shift?

The afternoon-to-late-evening tour that sits between days and nights.
