For hospital police officers

A medical center runs at full tilt at four in the morning on a public holiday. The rotation reflects that, and so does everything it collides with.

The rotation

Hospital departments cover the clock with a small roster, which in practice means twelve-hour Panama or 4 on 4 off patterns more often than anything else, with eight-hour watches at smaller sites.

Set it once and the year fills in — including the holidays, which in this job are working days more often than not.

Hearings, not just criminal court

A hospital officer's calendar carries dates a patrol officer's does not: commitment and capacity hearings, administrative reviews, and the criminal matters that arise on the property. They sit in different buildings on different calendars.

Court is a category from the day you install the app, the address auto-fills from your saved list, and the details of the summons go in the notes on the event.

Areas are not interchangeable

The emergency department at two in the morning, behavioural health, the campus perimeter, the garages. These are different nights and it is worth being able to look back and see which one you were on.

Training lands mid-set

Restraint, de-escalation, infection control, active threat drills — recurrent, mandatory and scheduled by people working days. Put it in the training category with an alert as soon as it is assigned; a class three weeks out on your second night is exactly the one that gets missed.

Outside work

Where your employer permits it, outside work goes under the employer who hired you with the hours, the rate and whether it has been paid. Medical centres often have their own approval process on top of anything else — your policy governs that, not this page.

A good starting setup

  • ShiftRate off, its own color per rotation
  • HearingCourt category, address on
  • TrainingAlerts on
  • Outside workEmployer and rate on where permitted
