What kind of agency fits you?
A hundred questions about the job as it actually is — then which agencies fit your answers. Nothing is asked about you: no name, no email, no account.
City Police OfficerDirect entry. Academy, then field training.
Sheriff's DeputyDirect entry — but many counties start you in the jail, or on court and transport, before the road.
State Trooper / Highway Patrol OfficerDirect entry. Expect a residential academy and a posting the agency chooses, with transfers possible later.
Correctional OfficerDirect entry, and usually the fastest route to being sworn. A common first job for people who later move to patrol.
Probation or Parole OfficerDirect entry, but most agencies want a bachelor's degree — the only field here that commonly does.
Campus Police OfficerDirect entry at universities that run their own sworn department.
Transit Police OfficerDirect entry at the larger systems. Smaller ones contract their policing out instead.
Airport Police OfficerVaries: some airports run their own sworn force, others are policed by the city or county.
Hospital Police OfficerVaries by state. Check that the post is a sworn police officer position rather than a security one.
Law Enforcement Park RangerDirect entry, state and federal. Seasonal ranger work is a common way in.
Fish and Wildlife Officer (Game Warden)Direct entry, and hard to get: few posts, many applicants.
Federal Special AgentNot an entry-level route. The FBI wants a bachelor's degree plus two years' professional experience, and applicants between 23 and 36.
Federal Police OfficerGenuinely entry level: Secret Service Uniformed Division, US Capitol Police, Pentagon Force, Federal Reserve Police. FBI Police requires a degree even for the uniformed post.
Border Patrol / Customs OfficerDirect entry, and one of the few federal routes that is. Expect a long hiring process and a posting you do not choose.
Port Police OfficerDirect entry at the larger port authorities, which run their own academies.
School Police OfficerRequirements differ by state and district: some sponsor you through an academy, others want you licensed before you apply.
Military PoliceNot an application — enlistment, with a term of service. Army 31B needs an ASVAB skilled-technical score of 91 and a secret clearance, then 20 weeks of one-station unit training.
FirefighterNot policing. A crew, a station, long tours and a rotation — and no enforcement.
EMT / ParamedicNot policing. The medical half of the worst day, without an arrest at the end of it.
911 DispatcherNot policing. Every call, none of the doorways.
Security Officer / TSA OfficerNot policing and not sworn: a post, a uniform, no badge and no arrest powers. Covers private security and federal screening work such as TSA.
What this is, and what it is not
It is a preference assessment, not an aptitude test and not a psychological one. It cannot tell you whether you would be a good officer. It can tell you which kinds of agency the work you say you are willing to do most resembles — which is the question most applicants never get a straight answer to.
Some of these statements are about the parts of the job nobody puts in a recruiting video. If most of those made you recoil, that is worth knowing now rather than in year two. No sworn result here is a job you can do while avoiding all of it.
