The rotation

Municipal departments still run more eight-hour watches than anything else, which usually means a 5-2 5-3 cycle: five on, two off, five on, three off, repeating every fifteen days. Because fifteen does not divide into seven, your days off walk through the week and never settle.

The other common answer is 4/10 — four ten-hour shifts and three days off — often wrapped in a multi-week rotation that moves you through days and nights. Some departments have gone to twelve-hour Panama or Pitman cycles instead.

Whichever one you work, you set it up once and the calendar fills itself in — forward as far as you want, and backward across the months you have already worked.

Court is its own problem

City court sits on top of the rotation rather than inside it. Subpoenas land on days off, on sleep days after a night shift, and in the middle of a stretch you had planned around. Court goes on the same calendar as the rotation, in its own category and its own color, so you can see the collision before it happens instead of the night before.

The off-duty market

Municipal officers usually have the most off-duty work available and the most employers to keep straight: bars and nightclubs, construction and utility details, sporting events, concerts, retail at the holidays, funeral escorts. Different coordinators, different rates, different pay schedules.

That is the part the app is built around. Each job is saved under the employer who hired you, with the hours, the rate, the pay, and whether the money has actually arrived. The scheduler's name and number stay attached to the employer, so you are not digging through texts to find who booked you.

When the year is over, the whole thing exports as a PDF you can hand to whoever does your taxes.

Mileage

City details tend to be close to home, so mileage matters less here than it does for a deputy or a trooper. It still matters if your department charges you for taking a marked unit to a detail — some do, many do not. Either way you can record the miles against the job and let the app total them.
