The rotation

Most campus departments run twenty-four hours with a small roster, which usually means twelve-hour Panama or 4 on 4 off cycles, or eight-hour watches on a 5-2 5-3. Larger universities with their own sworn force run the same patterns a mid-size city would.

You save the pattern once and the calendar fills itself in — which matters more here than in most places, because you are planning around a year that is already mapped out for you.

The academic calendar is the second rotation

Your shift pattern repeats every few weeks. The other pattern repeats every year, and it decides how hard each of those weeks is: move-in weekend, home football Saturdays, homecoming, finals, graduation, spring break, and the long quiet of summer when the population drops by tens of thousands.

Those dates are published months ahead. Putting them on the same calendar as your rotation is how you find out in March that graduation lands in the middle of your set of nights.

Events are the off-duty market

Athletics, concerts, commencement, conferences, visiting speakers. On a campus the off-duty work tends to come from the institution itself or from an athletics department, which means the same handful of employers over and over.

Save each one once and it is there for the next job. Log the hours, the rate and whether it has been paid, and at the end of a season you can see what the events calendar was actually worth.

Two sets of court

Campus officers work in two systems at once: the county or municipal court for criminal matters, and the university's own conduct process for everything handled internally. They run on different calendars and neither of them cares about your rotation.

Court is a category from the day you install the app, and it carries alerts — anything from five minutes to a week ahead.

Summer is when training happens

With the campus empty, in-service, range, and specialised schools land in the summer months. Put them in the training category as soon as they are assigned; those are the dates most easily lost between semesters.

Mutual aid and the surrounding department

Most campus forces work alongside a city department, and the busiest nights involve both. Where that means working somewhere other than your usual patrol area, the address and the miles go on the entry with it.
