2 on 2 off schedule

What the 2 on 2 off schedule is
Two twelve-hour shifts, two days off, and straight back round. Four days from start to repeat, which is the shortest cycle any agency runs continuously.
Nobody works more than two in a row, which is the point. Fatigue has no chance to build the way it does on four, six or eight consecutive shifts.
Four squads cover the clock: two on days, two on nights, offset so there is always a full shift on the road.
How the cycle runs
One four-day cycle, and it looks identical every time:
Set a start day, set the length to 4 days, and paint each one. This pattern walks, so each time round it lands on different weekdays — which the app works out for you.

Weekends off on this rotation
This cycle is 4 days, which does not divide by seven — so it drifts through the week and every squad gets much the same share. Around 13 to 13 full weekends a year, wherever you sit in it.
A year on this rotation: 13 full weekends off, spread through the calendar. A weekend counts only when both the Saturday and the Sunday are free. All 21 rotations compared →
Why it drifts
Four does not divide into seven, so your days off walk through the week. Work a Monday and Tuesday this cycle and you are on Wednesday and Thursday the next.
Over eight weeks you get every combination of days, weekends included, shared out evenly. Nobody owns the weekend and nobody is stuck without one — which is exactly why some agencies choose it and exactly why others will not.
Hours and the work period
Two twelve-hour shifts in four days averages forty-two hours a week, arriving as thirty-six one week and forty-eight the next.
The drift means the hours in any given calendar week vary, so what you worked and what the roster says can differ more than on a fixed pattern.
Who works it
Continuous cover with short runs:
- Municipal police patrol
- Sheriff's road patrol
- Corrections and detention
- Dispatch centres
- Hospital and campus police
- Industrial and plant operations
The trade-off
What works
- Never more than two shifts in a row
- Two days off after every run
- Weekends shared out evenly over time
- A cycle short enough to hold in your head
What hurts
- Days off drift through the week, permanently
- No fixed weekend, ever
- Frequent handovers between short runs
- Hard for anyone outside the job to keep track of
Put it on your calendar
Working it out by hand is where the mistakes happen.

Common questions
How many hours a week is 2 on 2 off?
About forty-two on twelve-hour shifts, alternating thirty-six and forty-eight.
Do I get weekends off?
Some of them. The four-day cycle drifts through the week, so weekends come round in rotation rather than on a fixed schedule.
How many squads does it need?
Four for round-the-clock cover — two on days and two on nights.
