The rotation

Airport departments cover the clock with a fixed number of posts, which usually means twelve-hour Panama or 4 on 4 off patterns, or eight-hour watches on a 5-2 5-3, with extra bodies pushed onto the morning and evening banks.

Save the pattern once and the calendar fills forward as far as you want to look.

The surges are predictable, which is the point

Thanksgiving week, the Christmas and New Year period, spring break, the summer peak. Unlike most policing, the busy days at an airport are known a year out — and so are the days leave will be impossible.

Put them on the calendar early. The officer who requests leave in February for a week in July has a better chance than the one who asks in June.

Posts are different days

A terminal post, a checkpoint response, airfield patrol, the response team — these do not feel like the same shift and it is worth being able to see which you worked. Because you build your own categories, each can be its own entry with only the fields it needs.

Recurrent training

Aviation environments carry more mandatory recurrent training than most departments: security directives, movement area driving, firearms, response drills. Most of it is scheduled well ahead, and most of it is easily lost between a set of nights.

Training is a category from the day you install the app and it carries alerts — five minutes to a week before the day.

Two court systems

Federal charges and state or county charges arising in the same terminal go to different courthouses on different calendars. Both addresses go in the directory once and both dates go on the calendar with alerts.
