A shift calendar for dispatchers
Comms centres run the same round-the-clock rotations as the officers on the other end of the radio, and usually with fewer people to cover them. The pattern is worth saving once; what you pick up on top of it is worth recording.
What comms centres actually publish
Dispatch runs the whole range — eight-hour watches on a 5-2 5-3, twelve-hour Panama and Pitman rotations, three on three off. Whatever yours is, it repeats, which means it can be saved once and drawn out for the year. And unlike most shift work, the employers write it down where you can read it before you apply.
“After a few months of training, Telecommunicators are assigned to a platoon where they will work 12-hour shifts with a close-knit team of professionals. Employees have 7 days off in 14 (compare to 4 off in a traditional 8-hour job), including every other weekend off.”
Seven days off in fourteen, with the whole of alternate weekends. That is the Panama fortnight, and the County leads its recruitment with it — because against a five-day week it is the strongest thing the job has to offer.

Shelby County, Indiana prices the same fortnight from the other end, on its own vacancy notice: “12-hour shift(s) with every other weekend off. Will work 36 hours 1-week and 44 hours the next week.” Three shifts one week and four the next is what seven twelve-hour shifts in a fortnight looks like on a payslip. Grant County, Indiana runs the other common one and states it in a line on its own application: “3 Days On/3 Days Off — 12 Hour Shifts” — a six-day cycle that never lands on the same weekdays twice.
Why a repeating cycle is worth saving once
A fortnight that gives you alternate weekends does not line up with a week, so the free Saturday moves through the month and the one you want off is never the one you think it is. A three-and-three walks further still — it comes back to the same weekday only every three weeks. Both are trivial to hold once they are drawn and impossible to hold in your head.
The shifts on top
Short staffing in a comms center means extra shifts, and they land at short notice. Recorded as events on top of the saved rotation, they leave the underlying pattern intact while still showing what the month actually was.
The second job
If you work a second job by the hour, it is tracked the same way an officer's off-duty work is: the employer, the hours, the rate, and whether the money has arrived.
What to switch off
The directory is built around court, jail and hospital addresses, which may be exactly what a dispatcher wants to keep. Anything else can be renamed or hidden.

Whichever of these your employer runs, the cycle is drawn out day by day so you can check it against your own roster before you save it.
