A shift calendar for security officers
Security work is often several employers at once, at several sites, at several rates. The rotation is the simple part. Knowing what each site paid you and which invoices are still outstanding is the part worth having.
The shift that changes length depending on the day
Security is the one trade here where the tour itself is not fixed. The same post can be an eight-hour watch on a Tuesday and a twelve-hour one on a Saturday, because the site needs covering differently at the weekend. The University of Missouri Police Department publishes exactly that on its own site.
“Weekday Shifts (Monday – Friday): First Shift: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. Second Shift: 3 p.m. – 11 p.m. Third Shift: 11 p.m. – 7 a.m. Weekend Shifts (Saturday and Sunday): Morning Shift: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Evening Shift: 7 p.m. – 7 a.m.”
Three eight-hour watches Monday to Friday, two twelve-hour ones at the weekend. A calendar that assumes every shift is the same length gets your hours wrong every single week. Static site one week, mobile patrol the next, an event on Saturday, a covering shift at another building because someone called in. The rotation underneath may be steady, but what you were actually doing on a given day is the thing you cannot reconstruct three months later — and it is what matters when a payslip is wrong or a client disputes cover.
Several employers, one calendar
Security work is often more than one badge: a contract site during the week, a venue at weekends, an agency filling the gaps. Each shift is logged under whoever hired you, with the hours, the rate and whether the money arrived, so the totals separate by employer instead of blurring into one number.
What to switch off
The police categories, the court entry and the directories can be renamed, hidden or removed. What is left is the rotation, the shifts on top of it and the record of what each one paid.
