Dunwoody Police Department entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Dunwoody Police Department starts at $62,301 a year — about $29.95 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $4,384 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $5,839 below the median for municipal agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Georgia run about 4% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $64,699 would somewhere at average prices — $2,398 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 89 against a national average of 100, where goods are 99. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
How big the department isDunwoody Police Department reported 66 sworn officers and 17 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.3 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 51,850.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Dunwoody does
The Dunwoody Police Department serves the city of Dunwoody, Georgia, an incorporated municipality in DeKalb County on the northern edge of Atlanta. It states its core values as Service, Integrity, Courage, Professionalism, Respect and Teamwork, and its vision as being a leader in providing exceptional police services while offering a work environment where staff are valued, supported and thrive. Candidates who join without Georgia certification attend a twenty-week basic mandate academy at the Fulton County Public Safety Training Center, with all training equipment and uniforms provided, and the City pays a $6,000 signing bonus.
Where the figure comes from
Checked 20 September 2026. City of Dunwoody, Police Officer Pay, Benefits & Hiring Process: "Police Officer Salaries: $62,301 - $99,682" — open the source document
$62,301 is the bottom of the City's own published Police Officer band and no arithmetic has been applied to it. Trainee class: NOT PRICED - the City names no separate cadet, recruit or academy wage, and it does describe the academy route for candidates without certification: non-certified officers are scheduled to attend basic mandate training at the Fulton County Public Safety Training Center, a twenty-week academy, with all training equipment and uniforms provided. The City publishes no second, higher figure for after that academy, so the bottom of the single published band is what a candidate with no prior service is hired at. $99,682 is the top of the band and is a ceiling, not a step. Excluded from the figure: the $6,000 signing bonus. THE WEAKNESS IN THIS ROW, STATED PLAINLY: the band bottom carries no experience qualifier and no effective date, and the City prices no lateral rate, so the non-lateral test rests on the ABSENCE of any separately priced alternative rather than on a positive statement. NEXT DOCUMENT: the City of Dunwoody pay plan or adopted budget, which would date the band and say whether the bottom is the hire rate. NAME TRAP: Dunwoody is an incorporated city inside DeKalb County, whose own county police department is also on the roster at $61,000 - a separate and much larger agency covering the unincorporated county around it.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
