Sheridan County Sheriff's Office entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Sheridan County Sheriff's Office starts at $54,184 a year — about $26.05 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $12,500 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $9,375 below the median for county agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Wyoming run about 7% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $58,457 would somewhere at average prices — $4,273 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 71 against a national average of 100, where goods are 95. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isSheridan County Sheriff's Office reported 17 sworn officers and 36 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025.No rate is shown: this agency does not police a single population the FBI publishes a figure for. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. About Sheridan County

The Sheridan County Sheriff's Office polices Sheridan County in northern Wyoming, against the Montana line at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains, from 54 West 13th Street in the county seat of Sheridan under Sheriff Levi Dominguez. Its patrol division is nineteen sworn peace officers covering over 2,500 square miles of small communities, farm and ranch land, small industrial areas, private subdivisions and large tracts of public land — roughly a third of the area the office covers is state or federal public land, so the division works alongside federal, state and local agencies as a matter of routine, and provides law enforcement service in US Forest Service areas regardless of the contract period. Deputies patrol approximately 522 miles of county roads and 343 miles of state highways. Beyond patrol the office runs criminal investigation, civil process service, courtroom security, a detention center, a dispatch center, records, concealed weapon permits, fingerprinting, VIN and HIN inspections, foreclosure sales, a school resource programme and D.A.R.E. It has held a memorandum of understanding with the Wyoming Livestock Board since 2021 for targeted livestock patrol, particularly along the Wyoming-Montana border and across the summer and autumn ranges. The office names seven tenets in its mission statement: leadership, integrity, respect, honesty, service, trust and teamwork.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 8 September 2026. Sheridan County Sheriff's Office Employment page, published by Sheridan County — stated starting salary for a patrol deputy with no experience — open the source document
Read 8 September 2026 from the county's own Sheriff's Office Employment page, which states in its own words that the starting salary for a patrol deputy is $54,184.46 a year, $26.05 an hour, WITH NO EXPERIENCE. That phrasing settles the entry test on the page itself rather than by inference: the office says in the same paragraph that lateral pay is considered DOE for both patrol and detention, so the published figure is the non-lateral rate and the experienced rate is separately negotiated. The detention deputy rate of $51,573.54 a year, $24.79 an hour, is a corrections post rather than a patrol one and is excluded, as is the control operator position. The office states that it runs a competitive step and grade pay scale, so this is step one of a ladder; the ladder itself is not published on the page and step ladders are not collected. Benefits named alongside: health, dental and vision insurance, vacation, sick leave and participation in the statewide law enforcement retirement system.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
