Converse County Sheriff's Office was established in 1887 and still describes itself as a western sheriff's office whose members serve the county as peace officers, working from Douglas. It is made up of 48 sworn personnel across four divisions. Deputies patrol 4,265 square miles of subdivisions, mountains, grasslands and town — often several in a single day — using primarily pickups and SUVs, and the patrol division includes two deputies who specialise in commercial vehicles. Detention deputies work day and night shifts on a two-month rotation, covering weekends and holidays, and the office issues take-home vehicles to its deputies.
