Natrona County Sheriff's Office entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Natrona County Sheriff's Office starts at $57,711 a year — about $27.75 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $8,974 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $5,849 below the median for county agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Wyoming run about 7% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $62,262 would somewhere at average prices — $4,551 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 71 against a national average of 100, where goods are 95. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
How big the department isNatrona County Sheriff's Office reported 62 sworn officers and 88 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025.No rate is shown: this agency does not police a single population the FBI publishes a figure for. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. About Natrona County
The Natrona County Sheriff's Office polices Natrona County in central Wyoming from 201 North David Street in Casper, the county seat and the state's second largest city, under elected Sheriff John Harlin and Undersheriff Bart Olson. The county holds about 80,000 people. The office runs patrol across the unincorporated county alongside the Natrona County Detention Center, and stations resident deputies at Casper Mountain, at the Alcova and Pathfinder Reservoirs and in the Town of Midwest, so a single agency covers mountain, reservoir and small-town posts as well as open county. Its other named assignments are special response teams, court security, firearms, and search and rescue, and it maintains a volunteer Sheriff's Posse. Deputies advance both horizontally into those specialties and vertically through rank, on experience and education. The detention center holds federal detainees under contract in addition to county inmates.
Where the figure comes from

Read 8 September 2026 from the county's own Join Our Team page, which states that the starting salary is $4,809.25 per month with step and promotional increases, and that salary for lateral transfers will be determined after certification and experience is verified. The annual figure of 57,711.00 is that monthly rate times twelve; the office publishes the monthly rate and no annual one, so the multiplication is the only arithmetic applied and no allowance, differential or overtime is added. The lateral sentence settles the entry test from the other side: a certified transferee is priced separately after verification, so the published figure is the non-lateral rate. Wyoming recruits complete basic training at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, so no prior certification is required. The office runs a single deputy track with horizontal and vertical advancement, and names its specialty and focus areas as the detention center and patrol, special response teams, court security, firearms, resident deputies at Casper Mountain, Alcova and Pathfinder Reservoirs and the Town of Midwest, and search and rescue. The step ladder above the starting rate is not published on the page and step ladders are not collected.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
