Rock Springs Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Rock Springs Police Department starts at $65,894 a year — about $31.68 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $791 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $2,246 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Wyoming run about 7% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $71,090 would somewhere at average prices — $5,196 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 71 against a national average of 100, where goods are 95. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isRock Springs Police Department reported 38 sworn officers and 16 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.7 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 22,837.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Rock Springs does

The Rock Springs Police Department polices the city of Rock Springs in Sweetwater County, southwestern Wyoming, from 221 C Street. The City describes it as an agency comprised of 46 sworn patrol officers, three animal control officers, two parking and nuisance officers, one community service officer and nine support services personnel. It carries a wide set of specialty assignments for an agency of its size - detectives, a canine unit, a tactical response team, a critical accident team, crime scene investigation, bicycle patrol and school resource officers. New officers attend the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy at the City's expense and on full pay.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 20 September 2026. City of Rock Springs Police Department, Join Our Team: "Wage is $31.68- $38.94 per hour ($65,894 to $81,001 per year), depending on experience" — open the source document
$65,894 is the City's own annual figure for the bottom of the published band and no arithmetic has been applied to it; the City prints the hourly equivalent, $31.68, alongside it. The band is expressly priced 'depending on experience', which is what fixes the bottom as the no-experience rate rather than a range minimum floating free of any step. Trainee class: NO - the City names no cadet, recruit or pre-academy class and pays the same wage through training: successful applicants attend the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, the City pays all fees, and the page states applicants are paid full wages while attending. Prior certification is therefore not required. $81,001 is the top of the band and is a ceiling, not a step. Excluded from the figure: the twelve vacation days, twelve sick days and thirteen holidays a year.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
