Floyd County Sheriff's Office entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Floyd County Sheriff's Office starts at $53,560 a year — about $25.75 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $13,125 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $10,000 below the median for county agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Georgia run about 4% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $55,622 would somewhere at average prices — $2,062 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 89 against a national average of 100, where goods are 99. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
What Floyd County says about itself
The Floyd County Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining original warrants and keeping them up to date in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC)/ Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC).
What Floyd County does
The Floyd County Sheriff's Office works from New Calhoun Highway in Rome, in Georgia's north-western corner, and is CALEA-accredited and state-certified. It is not the county's patrol force - Floyd County runs a separate county police department for that, and Rome has its own city police - so the Sheriff's work is the jail, warrants, civil process, court security and transport. The Floyd County Jail is the largest building the county government owns: 256,000 square feet and 776 beds, built in 1982 and renovated in 1996, holding pre-trial detainees and county- and state-sentenced inmates for Floyd County, the City of Rome and Cave Spring, with an average daily population of 600 as recently measured. Beside the jail the office runs administrative services, the warrant division, civil and courthouse services and community services. The county was created by Act of 3 December 1832 and commissioned its first sheriff in March 1833; Sheriff L. Dave Roberson has held the office since 2021.
Where the figure comes from
Checked 22 September 2026. Floyd County Sheriff's Office, Job Information: "Sheriff's Deputy - $25.75/ hr*", with the footnote "*Higher pay based on experience, education, etc." The Jail Officer entry on the same page reads "$20.15/ hr*" and requires the holder to "attain and maintain P.O.S.T. Basic Jail Officer Certification within six (6) months of hire. (We send you)". — open the source document
$53,560.00 is $25.75 an hour x 2,080. The office prices hourly, states no annual and publishes no pay period or overtime threshold anywhere, so the multiplication is mine and 2,080 is both the roster's standard divisor and the only defensible one here. THE ENTRY TEST IS THE CLEANEST IN GEORGIA AND THE OFFICE WRITES IT OUT IN TWO SENTENCES: "If you are already a certified peace officer in Georgia we can bring you in as a Sheriff's Deputy!" and "If you're not a certified peace officer, you must apply as a jail officer. Once hired you may apply to have us send you to mandate to become a certified peace officer!" So an uncertified applicant CANNOT HOLD THE DEPUTY TITLE AT ALL - the pre-academy route is a different job in a different building at $20.15 an hour - and $25.75 is purely the certified sworn entry rate, with nothing beneath it to bar. That is the fourth of the Georgia shapes, shared with Spalding and Walker. THE ASTERISK POINTS THE RIGHT WAY TOO: "*Higher pay based on experience, education, etc." means prior service buys ABOVE this figure rather than a different starting grade, so $25.75 is the rate for a deputy with none. NOTE WHAT THIS AGENCY DOES, BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE COUNTY'S PATROL FORCE. Floyd County runs a separate county POLICE department for patrol in the unincorporated county, and Rome Police polices the city; the Sheriff's Office runs the jail, warrants, civil process and courthouse security. This row prices its sworn deputies, not a road-patrol class. THE COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT IS DELIBERATELY NOT WRITTEN: its page gives "$19.85 for non-certified, and $20.35 for certified" without ever saying per hour, carries no date, and sits 21% below this figure in the same county.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
