Spalding County Sheriff's Office entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Spalding County Sheriff's Office starts at $52,957 a year — about $25.46 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $13,728 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $10,603 below the median for county agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Georgia run about 4% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $54,995 would somewhere at average prices — $2,039 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 89 against a national average of 100, where goods are 99. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
How big the department isSpalding County Sheriff's Office reported 115 sworn officers and 75 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025.No rate is shown: this agency does not police a single population the FBI publishes a figure for. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Spalding County says about itself
It is the mission of the Spalding County Sheriff's Office to safeguard the lives and property of the diverse community we serve, improve quality of life, and ensure that our county is a safe place to live, work and visit.
What Spalding County does
The Spalding County Sheriff's Office works from the Justice Boulevard complex in Griffin, south of Atlanta, and is both CALEA-accredited and state-certified. Its Uniform Patrol Division polices the unincorporated county, answers calls for service and takes 911 emergencies, with 39 sworn deputy posts across four shifts on twelve-hour rotations - nine deputies to a shift when fully staffed, each under a lieutenant and a sergeant. The division also holds four K-9 teams for apprehension and narcotics work, a two-deputy H.E.A.T. unit set up in 2022, and the GCIC operators who enter and clear state records for stolen property, vehicles, missing persons and warrants. Beside patrol the office runs criminal investigations, fugitive apprehension and the detention center. Administrative offices keep weekday hours; field deputies and the jail run around the clock.
Where the figure comes from
Checked 22 September 2026. Spalding County Sheriff's Office, job description "Deputy Sheriff II (Position #2602)", effective July 16, 2024: "Pay Grade PS18; Hiring Salary is $25.46 per hour; schedule is based on 84 hour pay periods; 26 bi-weekly pay periods per year", with the minimum qualification "High School diploma or state-awarded GED required with successful completion of required certification courses; must be a Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified Peace Officer in good standing." — open the source document
$52,956.80 is $25.46 an hour x 2,080, the roster's standard divisor, used so this figure sits beside every other hourly row. SPALDING HANDS OVER ITS OWN MULTIPLIER AND IT IS A BIGGER ONE: "schedule is based on 84 hour pay periods; 26 bi-weekly pay periods per year" is 2,184 hours, which makes the deputy's actual annual $55,604.64 - $2,647.84 above the row. That is recorded here rather than built into the figure, because changing the divisor for one agency would break every comparison on the site. The 84-hour fortnight matches the Uniform Patrol Division's published tour: four shifts on twelve-hour rotations. WATCH THE CLASS NUMBERS HERE - THEY RUN THE OTHER WAY. Spalding's "Deputy Sheriff I" is NOT a junior patrol grade: the office's own employment page titles it "DEPUTY SHERIFF I (NON-CERTIFIED DETENTION OFFICER)", so DSI is the jail class and DSII, "CERTIFIED PEACE OFFICER", is the patrol one. Taking DSI because it is numbered lower would put a jailer's rate in a patrol row. NO PRE-ACADEMY WAGE COMPETES WITH THIS FIGURE, because Spalding does not pay one: the DSII description requires the applicant to BE a Georgia P.O.S.T. certified peace officer in good standing at the point of hire, so an uncertified person enters through the detention class instead. That is the Floyd County shape. The description also sets no minimum years of prior service, so $25.46 is the hiring rate for a certified deputy with none - the document calls it the "Hiring Salary" in those words. The post is non-exempt under the FLSA.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
