Smyrna Police Department entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Smyrna Police Department starts at $52,454 a year — about $25.22 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $14,231 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $15,686 below the median for municipal agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Georgia run about 4% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $54,473 would somewhere at average prices — $2,019 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 89 against a national average of 100, where goods are 99. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
How big the department isSmyrna Police Department reported 77 sworn officers and 52 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.3 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 57,432.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. Where the figure comes from
Checked 20 September 2026. City of Smyrna job posting, Police Officer (Uncertified & Certified), uncertified starting pay — open the source document
Posted 5 March 2026. Certified officers start on a range of $56,586 to $72,147 depending on law enforcement experience, so the uncertified rate is the figure for a new officer. STRENGTHENED 20 September 2026 with the sentence that actually settles it, which the row did not previously carry: 'Uncertified Officers move to Certified Officer rank and pay upon the successful completion of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Council Basic Law Enforcement certification AND acceptable performance during the 12-month probationary (working test) period.' Both conditions, not either. That is what makes $52,454 the entry figure rather than an academy wage: the move to $56,586 is gated on TWELVE MONTHS as well as certification, so the uncertified rate covers the academy AND the rest of the first year, and $56,586 is a twelve-month step. Contrast North Myrtle Beach and Berkeley County, where the higher rate lands on academy graduation alone and is therefore the one to take. NAME TRAP: Smyrna, Georgia is in Cobb County; Smyrna, Delaware is a separate department also on the roster, at $61,049.73.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
