Columbia Police Department entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Columbia Police Department starts at $60,611 a year — about $29.14 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $7,779 below the median of the 1,681 agencies on this list, and $10,653 below the median for municipal agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Columbia, MO run about 11% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $67,769 would somewhere at average prices — $7,158 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 69 against a national average of 100, where goods are 94. Based on price levels for this metropolitan area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
How big the department isColumbia Police Department reported 164 sworn officers and 67 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.2 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 132,072.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Columbia says about itself
The mission of the Columbia Police Department is to protect and serve by partnering with the community to solve problems and responsibly enforce the law.
What Columbia does
Columbia Police Department is a CALEA-accredited agency serving a central Missouri university city, working through an Operations/Patrol Bureau organised to cover the north and south of the city with Interstate 70 as the general dividing line, an Investigative Operations Support Bureau, a Special Services Bureau and administration. Officers spend most of their time on calls and connecting with residents in assigned beats and sectors. Alongside patrol it runs K-9, a homeless outreach team, municipal court security, traffic and DWI enforcement, and commissioned park rangers who patrol land managed by the Parks and Recreation Department. Criminal Investigations covers major crimes, crime scene investigation, a special victims unit, domestic violence and property crime, while Special Operations holds a street crimes unit, a vice, narcotics and organised crime unit staffed by plainclothes detectives, SWAT and a crisis negotiation team. Non-sworn community service aides handle non-violent calls so patrol officers can respond to violent or in-progress ones.
Shifts at Columbia
Sworn officers on patrol work a 12-hour day schedule, in two squads with two shifts per squad.
The agency publishes the shift length but not a named cycle. These are the 12-hour rotations departments most often build on it: Pitman, 4 on, 4 off, DuPont, Panama.
Two squads on 12s means the days you are free move through the week and rarely line up with anyone else's. Build the pattern once in BlueShifts and the month fills itself — and the shift differential this department pays from 6pm to 6am is the kind of thing worth seeing against the shifts that earned it.
