Barre City Police Department entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Barre City Police Department starts at $58,531 a year — about $28.14 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $8,154 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $9,609 below the median for municipal agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Vermont run about 2% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $59,751 would somewhere at average prices — $1,220 more than the headline figure. That average hides a wide spread: utilities at 126, where goods are 97. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
What Barre City says about itself
The Uniform Patrol Division provides the delivery of community-oriented police services as well as non-emergency and emergency response to calls for service, the investigation and reporting of criminal offenses, and enforcement of laws and local ordinances.
What Barre City does
The Barre City Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the City of Barre, the granite center of central Vermont, and works in five divisions: Administrative Services, Uniform Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Communications and Parking Enforcement. The Uniform Patrol Division carries the first response and the preliminary investigation of most crimes, and a traffic safety supervisor runs the traffic safety programme and acts as liaison to the City's Transportation and Public Works Committee. The department deploys a single canine team assigned to Patrol, available to assist other agencies in the area, and it is overseen by a City Police Advisory Committee that reviews department policy and reports to the Chief, Manager or Council. It publishes weekly police logs and an annual administrative investigation summary on its transparency page.
Shifts at Barre City
Barre City's own recruitment flyer states three consecutive days off per work week.
Three consecutive days off a week is worth seeing laid out a year ahead rather than a fortnight, especially when the days move. BlueShifts draws the run of days off straight onto the month and keeps the count of what you have worked.
Where the figure comes from
Checked 1 September 2026. Barre City Police Department 2026 recruitment flyer, published by the City of Barre: "$58,531 - $81,826 Base Pay" — open the source document
$58,531 is the bottom of the base pay range on the City's own 2026 recruitment flyer, which the Department's Employment Opportunities page links as the Police Officer description. A stated minimum, not a ceiling. Trainee class: NO. Prior sworn service is not required - the flyer prices a $5,000 bonus for non-certified officers alongside $10,000 for Level III certified officers, and the City's hiring process runs entry-level candidates through the Vermont Police Academy Level III entrance standards. Checked 1 September 2026. The flyer also states three consecutive days off per work week and VMERS D retirement at 50 per cent of the highest two consecutive years, collectable at 50. NAME TRAP: Barre City and Barre Town are separate municipalities with separate departments; a third Barre Police Department exists in Massachusetts.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
