Indio Police Department entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Indio Police Department starts at $92,476 a year — about $44.46 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $25,791 above the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $24,336 above the median for municipal agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in California run about 11% above the national average, so this is worth roughly $83,522 somewhere at average prices — $8,954 less than the headline figure. Most of that is utilities, at 159 against a national average of 100, where goods are 106. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
How big the department isIndio Police Department reported 69 sworn officers and 53 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 0.7 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 95,514.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Indio says about itself
The Indio Police Department has a long-standing reputation as a progressive and innovative agency that works collaboratively with community members and groups, business leaders, and across public service disciplines to compassionately address crime and quality of life issues in the neighborhoods of Indio.
What Indio does
The Indio Police Department serves the city of Indio, California, in the Coachella Valley of Riverside County, a community of more than 90,000 residents. Its officers are represented by the Indio Police Officers Association, and patrol runs on a twelve-hour shift plan of two shifts, day and night, each covered by two teams working opposite days, with shifts selected by seniority every six months. The City prices a Police Officer Trainee class in a separate bargaining unit on a separate schedule.
Where the figure comes from
Checked 21 September 2026. City of Indio, POA Salary Schedule effective 1 January 2026 — sworn job classes, grade 211 step 1: "211 1 $44.46 $7,706.32 $92,475.79". — open the source document
$92,475.79 is the City's own annual figure for grade 211 step 1 and no arithmetic has been applied to it - the schedule prints the same rate three ways, $44.46 hourly and $7,706.32 monthly beside it. THE GRADE IS BOUND TO THE CLASS BY A SECOND CITY DOCUMENT, because the POA schedule lists grades without titles: the City's Classification and Compensation Plan reads "Police Officer 211 $7,706.32 $9,835.43 IPOA", matching the schedule's grade 211 step 1 to the cent. THE TRAINEE CLASS IS A DIFFERENT GRADE IN A DIFFERENT UNIT AND IS NOT THE FIGURE: "Police Officer Trainee 184 $6,079.70 $8,982.50 MCU", priced on the MCU schedule at "184 1 $35.08 $6,079.70 $72,956.39". The schedule's own footnote records what changed - "Includes 2% COLA (AV) & a 6 Step pay grade for Police Officer". THE FIGURE IS DATED BY THE SCHEDULE ITSELF, 1 January 2026, and is confirmed still current by the Classification and Compensation Plan effective 1 July 2026, which carries the same monthly minimum.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift
differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more
than this.
