Tavares Police Department entry pay
What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.
Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.
Tavares Police Department starts at $55,855 a year — about $26.85 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $10,830 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $12,285 below the median for municipal agencies.
Cost of livingPrices in Florida run about 3% above the national average, so this is worth roughly $54,011 somewhere at average prices — $1,844 less than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 122 against a national average of 100, where goods are 98. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.
How big the department isTavares Police Department reported 32 sworn officers and 5 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.4 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 22,825.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Tavares says about itself
The mission of the Tavares Police Department (TPD) is to work in partnership with the community to protect life and property, solve neighborhood problems, and enhance the quality of life in our City.
What Tavares does
The Tavares Police Department is the municipal force for the City of Tavares in Lake County, the county seat, which calls itself America's Seaplane City for the municipal seaplane base on Lake Dora. It is a full-service agency of 32 sworn officers, one civilian code enforcement officer and 4.5 civilian employees serving about 19,000 residents, with K-9 and marine patrol units inside its road patrol division, and has been led since 2022 by Chief Sarah Coursey, a third-generation Tavares native and the first woman to hold the post.
Tavares’s rotation, in BlueShifts
The City publishes the road patrol roster in full: four squads, A through D, each on a twelve-hour shift, either 6:00am to 6:00pm or 6:00pm to 6:00am, working two days (or nights) on and two off, with two swing-shift officers covering peak demand and a sergeant over each squad.

September 2026
Two on, two off never lands on the same weekdays twice, so the day you are free moves every fortnight and the squad you are on decides whether it is a day or a night. BlueShifts draws the whole cycle forward, marks your squad's days and nights apart, and shares it with the people who need to know when you are actually home.
