Longview Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Longview Police Department starts at $67,070 a year — about $32.25 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $1,320 below the median of the 1,681 agencies on this list, and $4,195 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Texas run about 3% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $69,103 would somewhere at average prices — $2,034 more than the headline figure. That average hides a wide spread: utilities at 88, where goods are 98. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

What Longview does

Longview Police Department is authorized for 175 police officers and 62 civilian staff in East Texas, working a para-military structure under a chief, an assistant chief and two deputy chiefs. The city is divided into eight beats with a sergeant over each and officers assigned to a beat for a year, and the department runs an accredited academy whose TCOLE courses are open to other agencies for a nominal fee

Where the figure comes from

Checked 20 August 2026. City of Longview — Longview Police Department, Salary and Step Pay (Step Pay Table) — open the source document
Longview Police Department's own Salary and Step Pay page, which prints the department's Step Pay Table: Police Officer - Entry $67,069.68 a year, rising to $69,101.05 at one year and $93,774.93 at twenty-five years. The same page links the city's recruiting flyer titled 'Recruiting Flyer with pay scale FY25-26'. Longview publishes no separate cadet rate: its New Recruits page states the department hires new recruits, places them in a police academy as cadets, and pays 'Entry-level officer salary beginning at start of police academy', so this one rate runs through the academy, seventeen weeks of field training and the first year. No prior service is required, and this is not a lateral rate: the department trains non-certified hires itself and prices lateral entry separately.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
