The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is responsible for all law enforcement activity in the unincorporated areas of St. Louis County and for providing boat and water safety enforcement and maintaining the county jail and range lockups. The sheriff is elected by the people for a four-year term, with duties defined by Minnesota Statute 387.03, and shall have the charge and custody of the county jail and receive and safely keep all persons lawfully committed thereto. The office serves over 200,000 residents from offices in Duluth, Ely, Cook, Mountain Iron, Rice Lake, Hibbing and Virginia.
