Columbia County Sheriff's Office entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Columbia County Sheriff's Office starts at $51,147 a year — about $24.59 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $15,538 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $12,412 below the median for county agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Georgia run about 4% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $53,116 would somewhere at average prices — $1,969 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 89 against a national average of 100, where goods are 99. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isColumbia County Sheriff's Office reported 283 sworn officers and 64 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025.No rate is shown: this agency does not police a single population the FBI publishes a figure for. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Columbia County says about itself

The primary responsibility of the Patrol Division is to provide 24-hour protection and law enforcement services to the citizens of and visitors to Columbia County.

What Columbia County does

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office works from Appling and polices the suburban and rural county upriver from Augusta, along the Georgia bank of the Savannah and Clarks Hill Lake. Its Patrol Division is the largest visible part of it: 72 certified officers and 22 school crossing guards, covering about 330 square miles split into eleven beats, with deputies given permanent beat assignments so they come to know their own ground. Four shifts run the county around the clock, each with a lieutenant as shift commander, a staff sergeant, a sergeant and fifteen deputies, plus three zone cars a shift that can be sent anywhere. Beside patrol the office runs administrative services, criminal investigation, community services, the detention center, professional standards, special operations, court services and the county's E-911 communications center. Sheriff Clay N. Whittle leads it.

This cycle has its own page: how it works, and how to build it.

Four on, four off is an eight-day cycle, so it slides one day against the week every time round - the Tuesday you are off this month is a Wednesday next. That is the version nobody can answer from memory when they are asked about a date. BlueShifts builds the cycle once and fills every month ahead, so your own days are already there to look at.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 22 September 2026. Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Jobs, under Current Job Openings: "Patrol Deputy - 24.59/hr", listed above "Deputy Jailer (Sworn) - 22.36/hr", "Bailiff Deputy - Part Time (Sworn) - 24.59/hr" and "Communications Officer - 20.26/hr". The page states these are standing openings: "We accept applications for the positions listed below throughout the year and will keep them on file for two years from the date of receipt." — open the source document
$51,147.20 is $24.59 an hour x 2,080. THE OFFICE PRICES HOURLY AND STATES NO ANNUAL, SO THE MULTIPLICATION IS MINE, and 2,080 is the roster's standard divisor, used so this figure can sit beside every other hourly row. IT UNDERSTATES WHAT A COLUMBIA DEPUTY ACTUALLY EARNS IN A YEAR, and the office's own patrol page says by how much: patrol works "12-hour shifts, four days on, and four days off", which is about 2,190 hours a year rather than 2,080, so the real annual is nearer $53,800 before any overtime. That is recorded here rather than built into the figure, because changing the divisor for one agency would break every comparison on the site. NO LOWER RATE COMPETES WITH IT. Columbia publishes one patrol deputy rate and no cadet, recruit or non-certified line; the office hires uncertified applicants and sends them to the state academy itself, which is why its own jobs page explains what National Guard and Reserve members must submit for "acceptance to attend Basic Peace Officer Academy or Basic Jailer course". Academy status therefore never touches the rate, which is the standing test. THE LATERAL SIDE IS PRICED BY PAPERWORK, NOT BY A SEPARATE SCALE: an applicant with prior service from another state, the military or a federal agency must produce a state certification letter, the Basic Mandate Training certificate, a letter of good standing from every previous agency and an Equivalency of Training form, and the page names no higher entry rate for them. Bailiff Deputy is the same $24.59 but part time; Deputy Jailer is $2.23 an hour less.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.

How this level compares

Where Columbia County sits is partly about the agency and partly about which level of policing it belongs to. The three levels do not pay the same.
