Mendon Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Mendon Police Department starts at $62,060 a year — about $29.84 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $4,624 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $6,080 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Massachusetts run about 6% above the national average, so this is worth roughly $58,682 somewhere at average prices — $3,378 less than the headline figure. Most of that is utilities, at 152 against a national average of 100, where goods are 99. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isMendon Police Department reported 13 sworn officers and 2 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 2.0 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 6,479.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Mendon says about itself

We are Mendon. We bring our families here. We raise our kids here. We work hard to uphold the traditions and sense of community in our town, and we expect to be held to an extremely high standard.

What Mendon does

The Mendon Police Department serves about 6,000 residents across eighteen square miles in Worcester County, and is accredited by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. It describes its work as much about helping people and enhancing quality of life as about enforcing laws, and credits the town's low crime rate to the partnership between the department and the community, with community policing its stated approach to the problems behind public safety issues. Its patrol division deploys sector officers against analysed crime trends and runs an online property watch for residents away from home, alongside a citizens police academy and a police explorer post

Applicants must be 21, hold a high school diploma or equivalent and have graduated from OR BE ABLE TO ATTEND a full-time MCJTC/MPTC academy, so neither certification nor prior sworn service is required to start.
