Escondido Police Department serves an inland north San Diego County city from a three-storey headquarters of some 115,000 square feet housing patrol, investigations, a crime lab, a computer-aided dispatch center, the city's emergency operations center and short-term custody of prisoners. Its patrol division works as 12 teams of police and community service officers, each assigned to specific neighbourhoods for six-month postings. Alongside patrol it runs a psychiatric emergency response team pairing an officer with a licensed mental health clinician, a K-9 unit dating from 1985, school resource officers on three-year rotational postings, and a tactical operations group covering SWAT, negotiators, tactical dispatchers and specially trained fire paramedics.
