Brattleboro Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Brattleboro Police Department starts at $52,103 a year — about $25.05 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $14,582 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $16,037 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Vermont run about 2% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $53,189 would somewhere at average prices — $1,086 more than the headline figure. That average hides a wide spread: utilities at 126, where goods are 97. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isBrattleboro Police Department reported 28 sworn officers and 19 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 2.4 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 11,928.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Brattleboro says about itself

The department is committed to providing a safe, peaceful, and prosperous environment for our community by policing and serving the community in a manner worthy of respect.

What Brattleboro does

The Brattleboro Police Department serves the town of Brattleboro in Windham County at the southeastern corner of Vermont, working from 62 Black Mountain Road, Suite 101. It is led by Chief Jeremy Evans with Assistant Chief Adam Petlock. Officers are enrolled in the Vermont Municipal Employee Retirement System and receive twelve vacation days and twelve sick days a year, increasing with tenure. Candidates enter through three Basic Entrance Exams - written, fitness and psychological - held monthly at the Vermont Police Academy, then pass through oral boards, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a medical evaluation and a final fitness test.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 20 September 2026. Town of Brattleboro, Join Our Team: "As of fiscal year 2023, base pay for a Police Officer 1, after training, is $52,103.17 and the maximum pay for a patrol officer is $70,185.02" — open the source document
$52,103.17 is the Town's own annual figure and no arithmetic has been applied to it. Class: Police Officer 1, after training. Trainee class: YES and priced separately in words but not in figures - the Town says new officers are paid an Academy Wage, followed by a Training Wage, and gives no number for either, so the post-training Police Officer 1 rate is the only published figure and is the one taken, the same reading already applied to South Burlington, Rutland City and Brandon. Prior sworn service is not required: the entrance route the Town describes is the three Basic Entrance Exams held monthly at the Vermont Police Academy, not a lateral transfer. $70,185.02 is the patrol-officer maximum and is a ceiling, not a step. Excluded from the figure: shift differential of $0.75 on first shift and $1.20 on second, detail pay and overtime. STALE BY ITS OWN DATE - the Town labels the figure fiscal year 2023 and says police officers' salaries are negotiated by collective bargaining, so it is three fiscal years behind. NEXT DOCUMENT: the Town/police union agreement or the FY2026 or FY2027 Town wage schedule; the Town's applicant portal at secure4.saashr.com/ta/6155296.careers may also carry a current advertised rate.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
