Abilene Police Department is a full-service municipal agency in Taylor County led by a chief and two assistant chiefs over Uniform Services and Investigative and Support Services. It runs its own basic peace officer academy whose cadets are paid city employees while training, and fields bike, mounted, SWAT and a Surveillance Apprehension and Tactics Team alongside a records division handling nearly 30,000 cases a year

ONE RATE COVERS THE WHOLE FIRST PHASE AT ABILENE: $74,067 is paid from the academy, before being sworn; the officer is then sworn in and the pay does not change; it stays at $74,067 right through field training; and the first increase is PTO-Completion, $79,189, on finishing the Police Training Officer programme — a training milestone, not a change of status. So the academy rate, the newly sworn rate and the field-training rate are one number, and that number is the entry figure. The field training officer doing the training sits on his own step and is a different line entirely. This is Abilene's arrangement and it does not travel: most departments pay less during the academy and step up on being sworn or on graduating, which is why Corpus Christi is written at its post-academy $64,380 rather than its $55,428 trainee rate. Abilene runs a separate lateral route requiring two years' prior service, so this is the no-experience entry. Base only; education, certification, longevity and assignment pay are listed separately.
