Mt. Pleasant Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Mt. Pleasant Police Department starts at $64,646 a year — about $31.08 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $2,038 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $3,494 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Michigan run about 4% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $67,188 would somewhere at average prices — $2,542 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 82 against a national average of 100, where goods are 96. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isMt. Pleasant Police Department reported 29 sworn officers and 5 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.4 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 20,935.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Mt. Pleasant says about itself

The Mt. Pleasant Police Department (MPPD) protects our community with pride, integrity and compassion. The cornerstone of our unit is continual training that keeps our policies and practices up-to-date.

What Mt. Pleasant does

The Mt. Pleasant Police Department polices about eight square miles in the geographic center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula with 29 sworn officers, in a city of 21,688 that carries Central Michigan University's 14,000 students and around 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino at its eastern limit. Officers are also certified federal officers through the Bureau of Indian Affairs, part of the city sitting within the Isabella Indian Reservation. The department runs a Youth Services Unit and takes part in the regional Emergency Services Team and the Mid-Michigan Investigative Narcotics Team, and works a Crisis and Trauma Response Clinician alongside its partnership with R.I.S.E. Patrol runs twelve-hour shifts, 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am, on four squads.

What the agency publishes

The City's own Police Officer posting writes the roster out in full: "Once new Police Officers complete the 15-week Field Training Program they will be placed on a standard 12-hour shift. The current day shift works from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the night shift works from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. There are a total of four shifts, a day and night shift for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and a day and night shift for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Each day and night shift alternate working on Saturday. On an annual basis, a Police Officer works a standard 2,184 hours." Three fixed weekdays plus every other Saturday is seven twelve-hour shifts a fortnight, which is the 2,184 hours the City states.

The agency publishes the shift length but not a named cycle. These are the 12-hour rotations departments most often build on it: Pitman, 4 on, 4 off, DuPont, Panama, 3-4-4-3.

Three fixed days a week look easy to remember until the alternating Saturday moves and the fortnight stops matching the week. BlueShifts holds the fourteen days, keeps the Saturday on the right side of the cycle for years ahead, and marks the night tour separately from the day one - which matters here, because the $1 premium only runs between 7pm and 7am.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 2 September 2026. City of Mt. Pleasant — Police Officer posting — 2026 Start step, $29.60/hr on a stated 2,184-hour year — open the source document
Class: Police Officer, 2026 Start step. The City's own posting prints the whole ladder as a table - Start $29.60, One Year $32.52, Two Year $35.16, Three Year $37.77 in 2026, rising to $31.86/$35.00/$37.84/$40.65 in 2028 - and states the multiplier itself in the same paragraph: "On an annual basis, a Police Officer works a standard 2,184 hours." $29.60 x 2,184 = $64,646.40. THE 2,184 IS NOT A ROUNDING: seven twelve-hour shifts a fortnight is 84 hours, and 84 x 26 is 2,184, so the work year and the published cycle close against each other - the Dayton MN test. Trainee class: NO - the Start step IS the entry step, and the posting says only that new hires MAY be started at the one-year or two-year step for prior law enforcement experience, which is the lateral reading, not a separate grade. Prior sworn service is NOT required: the requirement is MCOLES employment standards, Michigan's certification route. A $1.00 shift premium is paid for hours between 7pm and 7am and is not in the base figure. Top of the current POAM agreement is $40.65/hr at the three-year step in 2028. City's own job posting, checked 2 September 2026.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
