Vineland Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Vineland Police Department starts at $58,000 a year — about $27.88 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $8,685 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $10,140 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in New Jersey run about 9% above the national average, so this is worth roughly $53,306 somewhere at average prices — $4,694 less than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 134 against a national average of 100, where goods are 107. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isVineland Police Department reported 147 sworn officers and 27 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 2.4 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 62,434.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Vineland says about itself

The mission of the Vineland Police Department is to protect and serve the citizens of the community.

What Vineland does

The Vineland Police Department serves the city of Vineland, New Jersey, in Cumberland County. Its officers are represented by PBA Local 266 under an agreement that places every new employee on an Academy and Field Training step and moves them to Step 1 on the January following completion of both, that eliminated holiday pay outright, and that compressed a twenty-one step guide to fourteen in the middle of its term. Patrol works four days on and four days off on shifts of ten and three quarter hours, with fifteen eight-hour training days a year.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 21 September 2026. NJ PERC-filed agreement, City of Vineland and PBA Local No. 266, 1/1/2024 to 12/31/2025 — Exhibit A Salary Schedule, "Salaries Effective January 1, 2025", Step 1: $58,000. — open the source document
$58,000 is the guide's own Step 1 figure for 1 January 2025 and no arithmetic has been applied to it. VINELAND IS THE ONLY AGENCY IN THIS NEW JERSEY RUN WHOSE CONTRACT STATES THE GATE IN WORDS RATHER THAN LEAVING IT TO A ROW LABEL, and it is unambiguous: "New employees shall be placed on Step A - Academy/Field Training Officer (FTO). Said employees shall move to Step 1 upon the ensuing January 1 following the completion of both the Academy and an additional period of time not to exceed 14 weeks provided for FTO time." The step lands on completing the academy and field training, which makes this the Berkeley County reading and Step 1 the post-academy figure. THE ACADEMY STEP IS PRICED AND IS NOT THE FIGURE: Step "A" reads $50,000 in the same column. THE BASE IS CLEAN AND THE CONTRACT SAYS SO IN ONE LINE: the holiday pay article reads in full, "This benefit has been eliminated through negotiations" - so unlike New Brunswick and Jersey City there is nothing folded into this guide. ONE COMPLICATION IS NAMED RATHER THAN HIDDEN: Exhibit A carries the note "The base salaries in this Exhibit shall reflect the successful attainment of college credits or degrees", meaning education drives STEP PLACEMENT rather than adding a stipend - but the salary article is explicit that a NEW employee starts at Step A regardless, so $50,000 and $58,000 are the entry figures whatever credits are held. THE CONTRACT EXPIRED 31 DECEMBER 2025 and a successor is not yet on file.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
