About Jacksonville
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is a joint city-county agency, created on 1 October 1968 when Jacksonville's police department and the Duval County Sheriff's Office were merged following a 1967 referendum that consolidated the city and county governments. It holds primary responsibility for law enforcement, investigation and corrections across the consolidated city and county, though Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Neptune Beach kept their own police departments; Baldwin disbanded its department in 2006 and the Sheriff's Office took over there. Patrol works through geographic districts, each divided into sectors and those into sub-sectors, with boundaries drawn from years of calls-for-service data rather than by area.
