What Madison does
Madison Police Department serves an Ohio River city in Jefferson County, southern Indiana, from West Street, with 27 sworn officers across a patrol division, detective division, emergency response team, training unit and bike and foot patrols. Its Mobile Events Team of bicyclists and golf cart operators is deployed during the city's festivals and community events, where it can move through crowds that a patrol vehicle cannot reach. A traffic division covers accident investigation, speed enforcement and DUI detection, and a field training division of officers with at least five years' service runs new recruits through 12 to 16 weeks of hands-on training after the academy. Hiring is overseen by a Police Merit Board.
