What Fort Wayne does
The Fort Wayne Police Department polices Indiana's second city through four Quadrant Operations Divisions - Northwest, Northeast, Southeast and Southwest - each commanded by a deputy chief and each with a satellite outpost inside its own quadrant, housed variously in fire stations, a building provided by a hospital and the Patrolman's Benevolent Association hall. The quadrants are deliberately unequal: the Northwest patrols about 33 square miles, the Northeast nearly 26 square miles with the largest population in the city and the lowest reported crime, and the Southeast under 16 square miles but with the highest calls-for-service load, so more officers are assigned there and it draws more attention from the Detective Bureau and the Vice and Narcotics Section. Alongside patrol the department runs an Investigative Support Division covering the detective bureau, juvenile aid and missing persons, vice and narcotics, victim assistance and evidence and property, plus its own police laboratory working latent fingerprint and palm print evidence, a crime analysis unit running weekly Comstat meetings, and a Citizen's Police Academy revived in 2025 after a seventeen-year gap. POLICE RECRUIT FIRST YEAR 2026: $73,448.56, $2,742.66 biweekly. Second year $77,529.03, and after two years an officer moves to FIRST-CLASS PATROL OFFICER BASE PAY, $81,608.28 for 2026 at $39.24 an hour. A lateral transfer starts at $73,447.40 for six months and then goes straight to full base pay, so a lateral reaches in six months what a recruit reaches in two years. THE NIGHT PREMIUM IS PRICED AS A FLAT ANNUAL SUM RATHER THAN A PERCENTAGE: $3,300 a year for second shift (2:00pm-10:30pm) and $6,300 a year for third shift (10:00pm-6:30am) - so on the recruit rate the graveyard shift is worth about 8.6% more, and the department states the shift windows outright. COURT TIME IS PAID AT DOUBLE THE HOURLY RATE and holidays at double time WITH THE DAY RETURNED TO THE VACATION BANK. Yearly education bonuses of $450 for an associate's, $900 bachelor's, $1,400 master's, $1,900 doctorate, and $450 for veterans with an honorable discharge, which cannot be combined with the degree bonus. Longevity from year 2 at $1,500, rising by $100 a year to $3,400 at year 19 and then JUMPING TO $10,000 AT TWENTY YEARS. Nine specialty units each pay $650 a year. Pension vests at 20 years on 52% of a patrolman's base, drawable from age 52, maxing at 76% at 32 years, with the city paying retiree insurance premiums for anyone leaving with 20 years' service.
