Round Rock Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Round Rock Police Department starts at $80,350 a year — about $38.63 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $13,666 above the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $12,210 above the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Texas run about 3% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $82,787 would somewhere at average prices — $2,436 more than the headline figure. That average hides a wide spread: utilities at 88, where goods are 98. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isRound Rock Police Department reported 177 sworn officers and 97 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.3 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 139,331.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. Round Rock Police Department works from a single 106,000 square-foot headquarters — a repurposed computer chip plant — and is guided by C.H.I.P. values of community, honor, integrity and pride. It is an accredited agency running its own TCOLE-listed academy on North Mays Street, and its 2022 resident survey found policing rated the most important service the city provides, with 91 percent of those with an opinion feeling safe or very safe

Where the figure comes from

Round Rock Police Department's own recruiting site publishes its Pay Step Plan as a PDF: 'Pay Scale for FY 2025-2026', Officer Base $38.63 an hour = $80,350.40 a year, Step 1 $82,742.40, running to Step 12 $110,240. The city's budget office states fiscal year 2025-2026 runs 1 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026. Base is the first step of the officer scale and the step a hire with no prior service occupies: Round Rock hires Police Cadets into its own academy as a separate class, and lateral entrants receive a one-for-one step credit for each year of qualifying law enforcement experience, up to ten years.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
