Hood River County Sheriff's Office entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Hood River County Sheriff's Office starts at $66,755 a year — about $32.09 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $70 above the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $3,195 above the median for county agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Oregon run about 3% above the national average, so this is worth roughly $64,584 somewhere at average prices — $2,171 less than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 109 against a national average of 100, where goods are 105. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isHood River County Sheriff's Office reported 23 sworn officers and 21 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025.No rate is shown: this agency does not police a single population the FBI publishes a figure for. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Hood River County says about itself

The Hood River County Sheriff's Office is proud to serve and protect the area's citizens & visitors.

What Hood River County does

The Hood River County Sheriff's Office polices the Columbia River Gorge under Mount Hood, running patrol, marine and forest enforcement, off-highway vehicle and snowmobile programmes, the jail, civil process, parole and probation, search and rescue, emergency management and the county 911 center. Its deputies, dispatchers and animal control officers are covered by one Law Enforcement Association schedule of eight steps, with no trainee or recruit class beneath the Deputy Sheriff grade. The County prints the BLS cost-of-living series its annual increase was taken from on the face of the schedule.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 21 September 2026. Hood River County, LEA 2026-27 Salary Schedule, "Effective 1-JUL-2026 - 30-JUN-2027", "Includes 2.7% COLA" — "S04 & Deputy Sheriff 66,755 68,827 70,899 72,950 75,001 77,009 79,017 81,003", Step 1 of eight, with the hourly line beneath it reading "32.0938". — open the source document
$66,755 is the County's OWN annual figure for Deputy Sheriff at Step 1, printed above its own hourly equivalent of $32.0938, so no arithmetic has been applied to it. THE SCHEDULE IS THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSOCIATION'S AND COVERS THREE CLASSES, ALL PRICED SEPARATELY: Deputy Sheriff at grade S04, Animal Control Officer at S02 and 911 Dispatcher at D02. Deputy Sheriff is the only sworn one and the highest of the three. THERE IS NO TRAINEE, RECRUIT OR CADET CLASS ON THE SCHEDULE, and none in the County's other published pay tables - Non-represented, AFSCME 1082 General, AFSCME 1082 Deputy District Attorneys, AFSCME 2503 Forestry and Public Works, FOPPO Parole and Probation, and Elected Officials - so Deputy Sheriff Step 1 is the day-one rate. Excluded from the figure: the seven steps above, topping out at $81,003. THE DOCUMENT SHOWS ITS OWN WORKING, which is unusual and worth keeping: it states "Includes 2.7% COLA" and then prints the BLS series it was taken from - "BLS CPI - U.S. City Average for All Urban Consumers for All Items, 12-month percentage change" with each month of 2025 listed - so the increase is not merely asserted, it is sourced on the face of the schedule. THE SCHEDULE IS SERVED FROM A SECOND HOST: the County's Salary Schedules page is on hoodrivercounty.gov but the tables themselves are on hoodriveror.govoffice2.com, and the Sheriff's Office runs a third domain, hoodriversheriff.com.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
