Prairie Village Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Prairie Village Police Department starts at $65,975 a year — about $31.72 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $710 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $2,165 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Kansas run about 10% below the national average, so this goes about as far as $73,250 would somewhere at average prices — $7,275 more than the headline figure. Most of that is rent, at 71 against a national average of 100, where goods are 94. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isPrairie Village Police Department reported 46 sworn officers and 10 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 2.0 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 22,909.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Prairie Village does

The Prairie Village Police Department serves the city of Prairie Village, Kansas, a Johnson County suburb on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metropolitan area, from 7710 Mission Road. New officers attend the Johnson County Regional Police Academy. The City publishes a single officer range topping out after ten years of completed service, pays a $5,000 hiring bonus, and runs a lateral transfer programme giving credit for years of service.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 20 September 2026. City of Prairie Village, Join PVPD: "Police Officer salary range: $65,975 to $93,380 annually" — open the source document
$65,975 is the bottom of the City's own published Police Officer range and no arithmetic has been applied to it. THE NON-LATERAL TEST RESTS ON THE CITY'S OWN LATERAL PROGRAMME, WHICH IS SEPARATE: the City runs a 'Lateral transfer program - credit for years of service', so prior sworn service is expressed as credit that moves an officer UP this range rather than as a different range - which leaves the bottom as the no-credit rate. Trainee class: NOT PRICED - the City names no separate cadet, recruit or academy wage, and states only that successful candidates attend the Johnson County Regional Police Academy. $93,380 is the top and is a ceiling; the City adds that officers top out after ten years of completed service. Excluded: the $5,000 hiring bonus. THE WEAKNESS, SAID PLAINLY: the range bottom carries no experience qualifier of its own, so it rests on the lateral programme being separate rather than on a positive statement that a new officer starts there. THE FIGURE CARRIES NO EFFECTIVE DATE. NEXT DOCUMENT: the City of Prairie Village pay plan or adopted budget. NAME TRAP: Prairie Village is a Johnson County suburb of Kansas City, Kansas - neighbours Leawood, Lenexa, Olathe, Overland Park and Shawnee all run separate departments and three of them are already on the roster.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
