About Douglas County
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office polices Douglas County in south-central South Dakota, 434 square miles and about 2,800 people, from the courthouse at Armour. The Sheriff is Christine Lau, working with a chief deputy, three full-time deputies, a part-time deputy and a part-time administrative assistant as authorized each January by the county commissioners under SDCL 7-7-20. The office also polices the City of Armour under a law enforcement service agreement, which for 2026 buys 22 hours of coverage a week at $53.22 an hour, and the Sheriff serves as county coroner.

The Sheriff Department is listed by rank: Chief Deputy Scott Powers $58,275.00, Deputy Phillip Lane $53,027.52, Deputy Joshua Knodel $49,000.00, plus certified part-time deputies at $26.27 an hour. $49,000 is the lowest full-time deputy salary and it is the post-academy entry rate rather than merely the lowest paid: the County's own Deputy Sheriff posting sets out the ladder as $47,000 a year for an uncertified officer, a $1,000 rise on completing the six-month probationary period and a further $1,000 on completing the South Dakota Law Enforcement Training Academy - $47,000 plus $1,000 plus $1,000 is exactly the $49,000 the county publishes for its junior deputy. The same posting requires only United States citizenship, a high school diploma or GED, age 21 and the ability to obtain certification within twelve months of hire, so no prior certification is needed to be hired; the uncertified starting figure of $47,000 is left out because it reaches this row only through job-board copies of a posting that has since closed, while the $49,000 is on the county's own document.
