Fredericksburg Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Fredericksburg Police Department starts at $64,000 a year — about $30.77 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $2,685 below the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $4,140 below the median for municipal agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in Virginia run about 1% above the national average, so this is worth roughly $63,301 somewhere at average prices — $699 less than the headline figure. That average hides a wide spread: utilities at 92, where goods are 100. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isFredericksburg Police Department reported 71 sworn officers and 25 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 2.3 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 30,595.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Fredericksburg says about itself

Our mission is to provide exceptional public safety services in partnership with our community to improve the quality of life for all.

What Fredericksburg does

The Fredericksburg Police Department serves the independent city of Fredericksburg, Virginia, on the Rappahannock River between Washington and Richmond. It employs 104 people in all - 79 sworn officers, 18 emergency 911 dispatchers, nine civilian support staff and nine part-time employees. Patrol officers work eleven-hour shifts on a rotating day, evening or night assignment, on a published cycle of four on, five off, five on, four off. New officers attend the Law Enforcement Basic class at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy, and officers joining with qualifying full-time Virginia law-enforcement service receive one-for-one credit toward a higher starting step.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 21 September 2026. City of Fredericksburg, Police Recruitment and Employment — Police Officer Recruit: "Starting Salary: $64,000" — open the source document
$64,000 is the City's own annual figure and no arithmetic has been applied to it. THE CITY PUBLISHES BOTH ROUTES SIDE BY SIDE AND THEY SHARE A FLOOR: the recruit route is 'Starting Salary: $64,000'; the experienced route is 'Starting Salary: $64,000 - $95,505 (depending on experience)' with one-for-one credit for qualifying prior full-time Virginia law enforcement experience. So prior sworn service buys movement UP from the same $64,000 floor, which is what makes it the no-experience figure. Trainee class: NOT PRICED - the City names no separate academy wage and states that a hire will attend the October 2026 Law Enforcement Basic class at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy. $95,505 is the top of the experienced band and is a ceiling. THE FIGURE CARRIES NO EFFECTIVE DATE, though the page is plainly current - it advertises recruit testing dates of 15 August and 15 September 2026. NEXT DOCUMENT: the City of Fredericksburg pay plan. NAME TRAP: Fredericksburg, Virginia is an independent city between Washington and Richmond - not Fredericksburg, Texas, and not Spotsylvania or Stafford County, which surround it and run their own agencies. SHIFT PATTERN PUBLISHED IN FULL BUT NOT BUILT - see enrich.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
