What Las Vegas Metropolitan does
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is a combined city and county agency formed on 1 July 1973 from the merger of the Las Vegas Police Department and the Clark County Sheriff's Department, and is headed by the Sheriff of Clark County — the only elected head law enforcement officer in the county. It polices the City of Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County, though Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City and Mesquite keep their own departments, and it serves residents and many millions of annual visitors alike. Work is organised through geographic area commands, each with its own station, officers, leadership and community programmes: Downtown covers 9.6 square miles including the Arts District and the Fremont Entertainment District, while Northwest reaches from the Sheep Mountain Range to Red Rock Canyon and posts resident officers to the outlying communities of Mount Charleston, Indian Springs and Creech Air Force Base.
