Miles City Police Department serves the seat of Custer County in eastern Montana, at the confluence of the Tongue and Yellowstone rivers. Alongside patrol it operates the Custer/Garfield 911 Dispatch Center — six full-time dispatchers including a supervisor, covering two counties — and the city's animal control services. The department says its officers stay extremely busy with the activity of the oil boom across eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Its officers are represented by the Miles City Police Protective Association, a non-profit first established in August 1938, which in its earlier years raised funds by hosting circuses.
