Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office starts at $103,644 a year — about $49.83 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $36,960 above the median of the 2,288 agencies on this list, and $40,085 above the median for county agencies.

Cost of livingPrices in California run about 11% above the national average, so this is worth roughly $93,609 somewhere at average prices — $10,035 less than the headline figure. Most of that is utilities, at 159 against a national average of 100, where goods are 106. Based on state-wide price levels, because this agency is not tied to a single metro area, from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024. The salary above is what the employer publishes; this line is our arithmetic on it, and nothing on this site is ranked on it.

How big the department isSanta Cruz County Sheriff's Office reported 145 sworn officers and 203 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025.No rate is shown: this agency does not police a single population the FBI publishes a figure for. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Santa Cruz County says about itself

The Sheriff's Office receives nearly 110,000 calls for service each year, the majority of which receive the attention of the Patrol Division.

What Santa Cruz County does

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office polices the unincorporated county on California's central coast, running patrol, investigations, the coroner's office and community policing out of its Operations Bureau, and takes nearly 110,000 calls for service a year. Its deputies are paid on the County's published salary schedule, which prices a Deputy Sheriff Trainee class one rung below the sworn Deputy Sheriff class on an otherwise identical seven-step ladder.

Where the figure comes from

Checked 21 September 2026. County of Santa Cruz Salary Schedule, Board of Supervisors approved 24 March 2026, revised 11 April 2026 — "DEP SHERIFF ++ 7/5/2025 RE5 L2 No 32 49.83 ... 8,637.03 11,569.78", the first step of class RE5 at $49.83 an hour and $8,637.03 a month. — open the source document
$103,644.36 is the County's own monthly figure for Step 1, $8,637.03, at twelve months. The schedule also prints the step as $49.83 an hour, which at 2,080 hours gives $103,646.40; the monthly column is the County's own arithmetic and is the one used, and the two differ by two dollars a year. THE TRAINEE IS A SEPARATE CLASS AND IS NOT THE FIGURE: the same schedule carries "DEP SHERIFF TRNEE" as class RE3 at $47.41 an hour, and its ladder is the deputy ladder shifted down by exactly one rung - the trainee's second step, $49.83, is the deputy's first. So the step from trainee to deputy is the academy, and the deputy's own Step 1 is the day-one rate for a sworn deputy. Excluded from the figure: the six steps above, which run to $66.75 an hour and $11,569.78 a month. THE SCHEDULE'S OWN STATED PERIOD HAS LAPSED AND THAT IS NAMED RATHER THAN HIDDEN: the title block reads "Effective Dates: (7/1/2025 - 6/30/2026)", but it is the document the County published into its 2026-27 budget folder, revised 11 April 2026 and Board-approved 24 March 2026, and it is the current published schedule. A LIVE COUNTY SALARY TABLE EXISTS at www2.santacruzcountyca.gov/personnel/salsched/ and would confirm or supersede this; it renders empty to a plain fetch and has not yet been read.
Entry-level base salary only. Overtime, bonuses, education incentives, shift differentials, locality pay and lateral rates are excluded, so most officers earn more than this.
