Algonquin Police Department entry pay

What this agency pays a new officer to start, and how that compares with the rest of the country.

Entry pay onlyEvery salary here is what an officer is paid on day one, out of the academy — base pay on a 40-hour week, with no overtime, shift differential, specialty or education pay counted. Nobody stays on it.

Algonquin Police Department starts at $75,382 a year — about $36.24 an hour on a 2,080-hour year, before overtime. That is $6,992 above the median of the 1,681 agencies on this list, and $4,118 above the median for municipal agencies.

How big the department isAlgonquin Police Department reported 48 sworn officers and 5 civilian staff to the FBI for 2025. That is 1.6 officers per 1,000 residents, over a population of 30,758.A rate is only meaningful for a city department, where the population served is the city’s own. Reporting to the FBI is voluntary, so a count can reflect a partial return as easily as a small agency, and the FBI asks that agencies not be compared on staffing. What Algonquin says about itself

The Police Department is charged with protecting the safety and welfare of the public. The majority of the officers are responsible for patrol duties, but others serve as DARE, crime prevention, accident investigators, high school liaison, and investigation officers.

What Algonquin does

Algonquin Police Department serves a McHenry County village in Chicago's north-western commuter belt, from Harnish Drive. Most of its officers work patrol, while others serve as D.A.R.E., crime prevention and accident investigation officers, high school liaison and investigators; one investigator and a patrol officer work as gang specialists, and another officer is assigned to the North Central Narcotics Division as a clandestine operative. Members also serve on a number of regional task forces. Civilian staff cover records processing, telecommunications and community service. Hiring and discipline run through a Police Commission of village residents, which meets quarterly.
